There are 12 vertebrae that make up the upper back. These vertebrae are called the Thoracic Vertebrae and labled T1 till T12 from top to bottom.
The ribs are firmly attach to the thoracic vertebrae, except for the last two, T11 and T12. The thoracic part of the spine provides stability and structural support to the upper back and allows very little motion.
On the photo C6, C7 and a couple of thoracic vertebrae are clearly visible on the woman's back.
